The Newton Needham Chamber of Commerce, a 625 member regional Chamber serving the suburban communities of Newton and Needham outside of Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking a President to manage a staff of three in conducting the business of the Chamber.

 

The President/CEO reports to the Chamber’s Board of Directors and the successful candidate has the following:

  • Skills in listening, strategy planning, communication and public speaking, rapport-building;
  • Experience in leadership, especially of a medium to large not-for-profit organization (preferably Chamber of Commerce or similar business organization);
  • A professional demeanor, positive attitude and work ethic, with skills in time management and organization.
  • Willingness and availability for commitments and responsibilities beyond normal office hours.
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree (higher level of education preferred).

Position Description

 

President

 

 

Reports to: Board of Directors

 

Overview:

The president is the chief administrative officer of the organization and reports directly to the Board of Directors.  The president is responsible for a full range of activities including; organizational structures and procedures; motivation of volunteers; income and expenditures; maintenance of membership; employment; training and supervision of staff; interpretation of policy; maintenance of quarters; and long range planning.

 

Principle Activities:

 

This listing is the essential activities of the position which may be supplemented as business necessity requires.

 

            Specific Responsibilities:

 

1.)  Program of Action: Prepare the written presentation of a program of action designed to meet chamber and community needs identified by the Board of Directors with solicited input from the membership and committee chairs on an annual basis.

 

2.)  Chamber Structures and Procedures: Insure that the organization is effectively geared to function with maximum efficiency in the anticipation, identification and solution of Chamber/community problems.

 

3.)  Motivation to Volunteers: Motivate and inspire volunteers to creative and fruitful action.

 

4.)  Finance:  Create and present to the Finance Committee an annual budget relating to the program of action.  Supervise bookkeeping process and the creation of reports to the appropriate Committees.  Insure that all financial records are available for audits as determined by the Board.  Operate within the budget presented and adopted by the Board.

 

5.)  Membership:  Supervise and maintain all membership records.  Responsible for the maintenance of the membership at a level which will insure the necessary income for the operation of the program of action and internal structure of the chamber.

 

6.)  Staff: Responsible for hiring, training and motivating staff.

 

7.)  Interpretation of Policy:  Insure that the Chamber Policy, as established by the Board is properly recorded and adhered to.  The President will assist the Chairman in the preparation of all statements on public issues.

 

8.)  Long Range Planning: Under a constantly evolving Board of Directors and Officers, the President is responsible for maintaining continuity and consistency in programming.

 

            Other responsibilities:

 

1.)                   Maintain a positive working relationship and professional demeanor with the Board of Directors.

 

2.)                   Analyze and interpret needs of the members and recommend revisions in the program of action that will add value to the membership.

 

3.)                   Create and maintain working conditions that will be conducive to maximum performance and employee morale.

 

4.)                   Oversee and manage the Chamber’s website.

 

5.)                   Maintain personal contacts with key community leaders to help shape the Chamber’s role and to represent the Chamber at a local, state and national organizations where appropriate.

 

 

Minimum position requirements:

 

Education: College Degree

 

Computer Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office products, QuickBooks, and advanced skills on database management.

 

Experience: 5-7 years of progressive business experience.  Strong organizational and managerial skills.

 

Physical: Work is sedentary requiring only minimum physical demands with extended periods of sitting.  Ability to operate office equipment.

 

Work Conditions: Work is normally performed in an office environment with frequent travel for membership recruitment and associated meetings within the communities of Newton and Needham.
